Twenty one years is a very long time in the world of philanthropic fundraisers – especially in Las Vegas. To put it another way, if the Nathan Adelson Hospice’s annual Serenades of Life – Doctors in Concert event was a person, she’d be old enough to drink.
This year, the incredible Lee Ann Womack is headlining the concert, and I’m pretty psyched. “How incredible?” you might be asking… Incredible enough that she’s won a half-dozen Country Music Association Awards (CMAs), five Academy of Country Music Awards (ACMs), not to mention that little award given out by The Recording Academy, known as a Grammy.
Womack’s music should resonate with anyone familiar with Las Vegas’ resident shows, as her massive millennial crossover hit, “I Hope You Dance” (from her album of the same name), has been a featured moment in Gladys Knight’s A Mic and a Light (Tropicana Las Vegas), and, more recently, Jennifer Lopez’s All I Have (The AXIS at Planet Hollywood).
“Having Lee Ann Womack join us this year is phenomenal,” says Carole Fisher, President/CEO of Nathan Adelson Hospice – Southern Nevada’s largest non-profit hospice - before addressing the focus of this year’s program. “We are so proud to be hosting this special tribute to veterans. As a member of the national We Honor Veterans program, it’s an honor for us to provide specialized hospice care to these heroes, who have served our country.”
Joining Womack onstage, at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, as is the custom with this affair, will be some of the more musically inclined members of the Southern Nevada medical community, including Loren Little, M.D. and the Little Jazz Band, Dr. Alan Arnold, Dr. Robert Lieberman, Dr. Morton Hyson, David Miller, M.D., and Alter’d Ego featuring Dr. Edwin Kingsley, June Sigman, M.D., and Ira Spector; with musical numbers ranging from soul to rock ‘n’ roll.
Longtime Hospice supporter, Brad Garrett isn’t just the evening’s emcee; but he’s also established the annual Brad Garrett Humanitarian Award. In addition to being an incredible ally of Nathan Adelson Hospice, this year’s honoree, Susan Sullivan has championed many organizations that support both veterans and active military, including the Nevada Military Support Alliance, the AFA Air Force Association Board, the Veterans Community Engagement Board, and the Nellis Support Team.
One of my favorite aspects of this special evening is that proceeds support Hospice’s Bonnie Schreck Memorial Complementary Therapies program. Established to improve the quality of life for Hospice’s patients and their loved ones; the Schreck program also alleviates their discomforts – both emotional and physical – through various therapies, including Pet Therapy, Reiki Energy Work, Message Therapy, Art Therapy, Reflexology, and Aromatherapy. It’s all part of Nathan Adelson Hospice’s vision that no one should end the journey of life alone, afraid, or in pain.
The event will begin at 7 p.m., Saturday night, at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, at Symphony Park in Downtown Las Vegas.
