For the past couple of months, I’ve been harping upon the fact that 2011 is the Year of the Shoulder:  The big shoulder, the extended shoulder, the puffy shoulder, the capped shoulder, the peaked shoulder, the exaggerated shoulder, and the full-on Joan Crawford shoulder.

One need look only back as far as last month's Golden Globes, where the best gowns of the night draped Anne Hathaway and Angelina Jolie - and those dresses (by Armani Prive and Versace, respectively) were all about the shoulders.

To paraphrase Karen on Will & Grace, big shoulders are at the pinnacle of style, because, like everything else, 2011 “is all about the eighties, which was really just the forties with coke.”

For this post I’ve assembled a handful of recent images of some of pop-cultures most recognizable fashionistas, showing-off their broad-shouldered ensembles.

Then, after painstakingly going-over the Spring/Summer 2011 collections from roughly 50 design-houses from the fashion capitals of the world (Tokyo, Milan, London, Paris, and New York), I’ve chosen 47 looks from 30 designers that epitomize this trend.
