In these days of brand marketing and sound-bites, it’s one thing to be dubbed “Empress of Soul” – but it’s another thing, altogether, to have a track record of hit singles tracing back to 1961, and still be packing showrooms a half century later. That’s longer than Aretha, Cher, and even Miss Ross. But for Gladys Knight, it’s no big thing. Performing is what makes her happy.
Now, alongside such top-drawer attractions as Nikki Beach, the Las Vegas Mob Experience, and Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club, Gladys Knight has emerged as one of the jewels in the crown of the newly re-imagined Tropicana Las Vegas.

The show, Gladys Knight: A Mic and a Light, features the seven-time Grammy winner, performing an electric selection of songs from her catalogue – both as lead singer of Gladys Knight and the Pips, and as a successful solo vocalist. It’s all here. The early hits that have become so ingrained in our pop-culture playlist, like “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “If I Were Your Woman;” Knight’s hits from the movies, including the Curtis Mayfield produced “On and On” (from the soundtrack to Claudine), an empowering rendition of Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" from Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys, and the title track to the James Bond film, License to Kill; songs from her upcoming Randy Jackson produced album; and favorites like “Nitty Gritty” and that timeless hit, “Midnight Train to Georgia” (woo-woo).

This isn’t a show with aerialists and pyrotechnics and a dozen costume-changes. This is a show centered on one of the great vocalists of our time, who is showcasing her dynamite voice in a classic Vegas showroom. Sure, she’s got a fantastic support system in place, including a great band, terrific back-up singers, and her brother, original Pip, Merald “Bubba” Knight (who is not only a damned fine singer, but can dance his ass off, and is particularly funny).
The Gladys Knight Theater, provides an intimate experience, and allows Miss Knight to present a show that is at once seamless and interactive. Furthermore, as a bonus for locals, anyone with a Nevada ID receives a free upgrade to an assigned seat in one of the VIP sections, for the price of a General Admission ticket (restrictions apply).

Whether young or old, hipster or fuddy-duddy, if you’re looking for a contemporary performance wrapped-up in the guise of a classic Vegas show, Gladys Knight is just what the doctor ordered.
As Gladys said on the 1980 album Gladys Knight and the Pips: Live at the Roxy, “It ain’t about cars and houses. It’s about attitude.” True dat, Miss Gladys.
