This Sunday, a new party will be taking off at the Downtown Cocktail Room (located at 111 Las Vegas Boulevard South). Called The Chase, it will feature the musical stylings of DJ88 (aka Bree Cohen) and DJ Create (aka Dave Fogg). As you'll see from this interview that the lovely DJ88 granted exclusively to ShulmanSays, The Chase will be nothing short of foxily fresh. But don't take my word for it...
THE CHASE and DJ88's Birthday Party at Downtown Cocktail Room
ShulmanSays: What type of sounds can we expect from you and Dave at The Chase?
DJ88 (Photo: Ryan Reason)
DJ88: Electro-soul, classic hip-hop, and Disco dopeness.
SS: Why is Downtown Cocktail Room an appropriate venue for this kind of party
DJ88: Because it’s one of the foxiest bar/lounges in the city and the vibe is a perfect fit for The Chase. Dave and I always talked about doing something together off the beaten path we’re pretty excited to “brand” this party and create a foxy hang out for foxy people…
SS: What kind of party IS The Chase?
DJ88: The Chase is actually a branch off of the FRESH tree… FRESH is a very special event I do with Michael Cornthwaite, where we celebrate the foxy fusion between fashion and music. Our first FRESH event was with Alexander McQueen in September. Since the FRESH event is such a huge production and we’re only doing them every so often we wanted to create a little sister version for taste-making style-driven music-junkie locals to enjoy. Meanwhile there are no recurring parties like the great parties that used to happen in LA and NY in the '90s (i.e. Jackie 60, Sound Factory, Disco 2000, Beige, Make-up, Life's a Bitch, etc.) out here in Vegas. Hence, The Chase begins…
SS: Do you have any signature (or good luck) songs that you might throw into a set for whimsy? If so what are they?
"The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight"
DJ88: Of course! Signature, yes: Good luck, not really. I have so many different favorites from different genres that it really depends on where I’m playing. I almost never finish a night without playing what I'm feeling. If it were up to me I’d be playing classic soul and underground hip-hop from the '80s and '90s all night, but since this is Las Vegas, and there are no rooms for that, I pepper-in my favorites to fulfill my fix. “I Ain’t No Joke” by Eric B & Rakim and “I’m a Good Woman” by Barbara Lynn are two consistent favorites, and “The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight” by Dominatrix is usually a must as well. Sunday will definitely warrant classic soul, funky electro-disco things, and some sexy soul-House, as well as this song that Dave turned me onto called “Move For Me” by Kaskade with which I’m obsessed; it just reminds me of my 20s (which were only a few years ago, of course…).
You heard it here, first. Get into The Chase, this Sunday night, at Downtown Cocktail Room – and wish DJ88 a very happy birthday!
