Over the past three years, during its run on ABC, I found myself rather blasé about the sitcom Cougar Town. After watching sporadically, I realized I’d begun routing for the quirky little comedy that espoused all of the benefits of day-drinking, friendship, and day-drinking with friends.
Then, just as I was starting to enjoy regularly watching the show, a curious thing happened. Following in the footsteps of sister Turner network, TNT (that had rescued the critically acclaimed drama, Southland, from its demise on NBC, in late 2009), TBS announced that it would be picking-up Cougar Town from ABC; because, according to the Twitter-feed of producer, Bill Lawrence, “Might have gotten 13 midseason at ABC, but get 15, highly promoted at TBS.”
Now, the Cul-de-Sac Crew is back, wine in hand, and ready to resume the merriment, only (now that it’s on basic cable) with more cleavage, racier language, and less oversight from the censors. Also, look for storylines that are, in the words of co-star Dan Byrd, as “abstract and weird,” because, as the actor points-out, TBS allows for “a lot more creative freedom.”
For my money, Busy Phillips still steals the show – but the ensemble cast is fantastic, and really makes the most of the fantastic writing. Star/co-Executive Producer, Courtney Cox directed tonight’s Season Premiere, and it looks sharp.
So, decant your wine, call your friends, and hunker-down in front of your television, for the second act of one of the more original comedies, on the air, these days.
Thanks, TBS. You really are “very funny.”
