I love sharing the things that amuse me with my readers, no matter how seemingly mundane or banal, whether that finds me discussing a particularly well-made cinnamon bun, a great spicy tuna roll, or, as today, an advertising campaign.

Anyhow, I’d been out of town for most of January, and upon my return to Las Vegas, I began noticing these seemingly simple billboards for Station Casinos, wherein a clever quip—often directed at Las Vegas locals—was written in white and left-hand-justified on a black background, with the logos for the company and the “From Vegas with Love” campaign aligned on the right.  The first one that I recall seeing read “Shoutout to everyone that “just moved here for a couple of years” and never left.”  That elicited a mental chuckle, but I was driving, and it got relegated to the dark recesses of my memory.

Then, probably a week later, I was running errands in my new neighborhood (which is not far from Palace Station), when I saw one that read “The only city where you hear “Spaghetti Bowl” and lose your appetite.”  This one caused me to loudly chortle, make a U-y, drive back, and take a photo.

At first, I was going to simply post the photo on the Instagrams, but then I figured there was probably a whole story behind the campaign, so I called Alex Acuña (Station Casinos’ VP of Public Relations & Digital Strategy) to praise the billboards and get the scoop.

Turns out the “From Vegas with Love” campaign—which, as Acuña explained to me, was created in honor of the company’s 45th anniversary—had been up and running since November.  Apparently, between buying and moving into a new house and traveling, I’d simply failed to notice.  What’s more, the campaign consists not only of the witty citywide billboard takeover, but also of a series of television spots narrated by the living American treasure that is Stevie Nicks (the first woman to be twice inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, and one of my all-time favorite singer-songwriters), whose instantly identifiable contralto is heard reading love letters to the residents of Las Vegas, while The Youngbloods’ 1967 cover of Chet Powers’ archetypal 1960s love-and-peace anthem “Get Together” plays over clips and images of various Station Casinos properties and team members.

To sum up these multimedia tongue-in-cheek billets-doux to Las Vegas and those who live and visit here, Station Casinos’ COO, Bob Finch, explains, “Station Casinos has been a part of the community for 45 years, and with the launch of this campaign, we wanted to pay homage to the city and the people who have helped make this company a success since day one.”

As yet another billboard in the campaign reads, “Been here. Still here. Staying here.”
