The other morning, I had a hankering for a hearty breakfast, so Jacob and I headed down to Simon Restaurant and Lounge at Palms Place. It was that in-between time, around 11am on a weekday, so it wasn’t too loud, and we were able to snag one of the elliptical booths along the windows facing the lounge where I particularly enjoy being seated.

Our server was particularly speedy, and had our beverages on the table before our eyes had even had a chance to adjust to the sunlight without our glasses. We placed our orders, then chatted a bit, sipping our piping hot coffee.
We decided to each get an entrée and split another. So, Jacob ordered the Breakfast Wrap, while I got the Breakfast Sandwich. Then, to split, we ordered the French Toast.

The meal came out, lickity-split, and we dug right in. Jacob’s Breakfast Wrap consisted of a Flour Tortilla wrapped around Scrambled Eggs, Potatoes, Aged Cheddar, Bacon and Green Chiles. According to Jacob it was everything he had hoped it would be, going so far as to proclaim that it is the wrap to which that all other breakfast wraps should aspire.

I got the Breakfast Sandwich with Scrambled Eggs, Ham, Bacon, and Cheddar on a Toasted English Muffin, making it rather like a gourmet version of the Sausage McMuffin with Egg from Mickey D’s. Since I don’t eat eggs, I asked the kitchen substitute Pork Breakfast Sausage for the eggs and ham, which the graciously did. And while devoid of any redeemable nutritional value, whatsoever, the result was incredibly delicious. I actually took the crispiest of the Hash Browns that came on the side, and added a layer to this sandwich that I’ve affectionately come to call the “Defibrillator Special.”

Now, both of the previous items can be made in the comfort of your own kitchen, without too much culinary wherewithal, but that French Toast? Oooo-eee! Made from Brioche, Crusted with Frosted Flakes, served with Vermont Maple Syrup, it is really something special. And while Chef Kerry Simon has certainly imbued it with a low-country down-home essence; with the fresh berries and the glistening golden hue of the cereal, it’s really a thing of beauty. Highly caloric, cholesterol-ridden beauty, but – as the Bard said – “a rose by any other name...”

Now sure, there menu features all the makings of a wholesome, nutritious breakfast for those of you with such leanings (such as the Veggie Cocktail, McCann’s Steel Cut Irish Oatmeal, and the Fruit Platter); but now that the temperature has really begun to drop, Simon shines as the go-to place for a hot morning meal that’ll really stick to your bones.
