It’s nice to know that the Vegas party-wheel has kept on spinning, now that the throngs of New Year’s Eve revelers have returned to whence they came. To wit: the surprise party thrown by Lacy Schorr to honor her husband, Fifth Street Gaming CEO, Seth Schorr’s 35th birthday, on Wednesday night, at Surrender Nightclub at Encore Las Vegas.
The nightclub (a decidedly Technicolor affair) was decorated with an out-and-out trove of black-and-white photos, provided by Seth’s family, friends, loved-ones, and pals; both of Seth (throughout the past 35 years) and of themselves. Photos were blown-up and placed on easels (like an adorable photo of Jon Fine and Seth in the early’80s); while others were placed in frames around pillars; and others still formed a figural collage (in the shape of an enormous “35”) on the wall to the right of the screen; upon which a slide-show of still more images ran in a loop, over the DJ’s head.
The black-and-white theme (that I extended to the photos I took at the party) was a nod to Seth’s love of photography – a passion he inherited from his father, Marc; and one which he will no doubt pass along to his son, Dax. As one would expect, there was a whole lotta Chanel in effect, and little black dresses as far as the eye could see – except for Lacy, who was resplendent in a long white cocktail dress. Of course, with her stunning figure and features, Lacy is one of those women who can wear white all winter long, and look fabulous doing so.
Jacob was giving his new glasses a spin (I love the way they make him look like a taller, cuter and slightly lecherous cross between two of my favorite ‘70s icons – Robert Evans and Charles Nelson Reilly), whilst I opted to wear a Kid Robot t-shirt Jacob had recently given me, with the phrase “I Am Plastic” emblazoned across the front, in big letters. I’m not sure why, but virtually everyone there puzzled by the message that I found to be very perfectly suited to our fair city. Be that as it may, far and away the funniest comment of the night came from Jeff Fine, who, upon reading the shirt’s message, gestured at my chest, saying “You know, Shulman; I always assumed those were real.”
Outside, on the patio (that had been covered for the affair), there was a beautiful ice-sculpture and a terrific spread. The deejay played a zesty mix of mood music that mixed beautifully with the conversations amongst friends. All told, it was a fun night (albeit one we had to leave on the early side, as Jacob wanted to be there for our niece’s first day of preschool at TBS (he made it: I didn’t)).
Meanwhile – and apropos of nothing – the expression “Sis boom bah” keeps going through my mind, resulting in fits of giggling that must seem to others to be sudden onset craziness. Of course, “Sis boom bah” (as fans of Carnac the Magnificent will recall) describes “the sound made when a sheep explodes.”
