I can’t think of anyone I know whose life has not been touched by someone with a neurodegenerative disease – whether Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, or Multiple Sclerosis.  These diseases ravage the mind and body of those they attack, and sap the strength and resources of the families and caretakers who love them.

It is for these reasons that I am continuously in awe of everything that the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health has done, does, and continues to do – not only to find cures for these afflictions, but also to help those who care for the afflicted.  It’s a pretty wordy name, I’ll admit; but it’s an awesome organization – and it’s right here in Las Vegas!

And speaking of things that touch our lives, especially at this time of year, there’s Saks Fifth Avenue.  Maybe, for me, it was growing-up in New York.  Sure Macy’s had its Miracle, and Tiffany’s had its Breakfast, but I always preferred the building on Fifth Avenue and 50th, wrapped-up in big red bows and golden globes of light for the Holidays.  Sure, woe be to the 6 o’clock shopper caught without a car in the brownish-grey snow – but even trudging through the snow with soaking wet feet, like a fartatshish, albeit well-dressed matchstick boy,  those memories of shopping at Saks are the magic of which New York living is made.

Plus – the Saks in Las Vegas was where I was inducted into the VEGAS Dozen, and that was pretty awesome, too!

So now, for National Alzheimer’s Month, Saks Fifth Avenue is hosting a two-day shopping party.  Both today (Tuesday, November 1st) and tomorrow (Wednesday, November 2nd) Saks will be doing its part in the fight against Alzheimer’s, by donating five percent of the sales rung-in, at its Las Vegas store, to Keep Memory Alive – the fundraising arm of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.

I love it when organizations I like are able to come together.  So shop till you drop, people; and then shop some more; because 5% of everything you spend will go to find a cure for this terrible disease.
