The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, like many of the grand hotels built in the first decades of the century, has so many room configurations (over 150) that it’s nearly impossible to see them all – although it seems that over the past few decades we’ve stayed in dozens (to the extent that I know the reservation codes for many of them).

This year, I decided to try something a little bit different; and opted for one of the property’s Island Spa Suites (thanks, Dad!).  The Spa Suites are two-story townhouse-style lofts on the first two floors of the Royal Hawaiian Tower that have an open floor plan, featuring a powder-room, living area and large patio on the first floor; and a flight of stairs leading up to the bedroom area, that looks down over the living room, below.

The patio is adjacent to the pool area, but features full-growth plants and trees, giving the suites a sense of privacy; while the second story looks out of the upper level of windows, over the beach and the Pacific Ocean.

There’s a groovy chandelier that hangs from the double-high ceiling, marble bathroom with double vanity and an enormous walk-in shower that not only has a high-powered double nozzle, but a huge rain-shower hanging from the ceiling.  I love a rain-shower.  Also, the upstairs bathroom features one of those Japanese multi-function toilets.

These toilets are definitely a luxury item, and are great in theory (I first encountered them at Las Vegas’ Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa); but I think mine is possessed by a poltergeist, because while in the midst of groggily collecting my thoughts for the morning, the toilet switched into bidet mode, and scared the absolute bejeezus outta me.  I’ve got nothing against bidets, mind you; but it was kinda like coming off the dance floor, all hot and sweaty, and having your friend hand you what appears to be a refreshing glass of water, only to realize that your loving lush of a friend has handed you a glass of vodka.  On the plus side, I was no longer groggy, whatsoever.
