Like much of my tribe, I love Chinese food. So, when I was invited to check out Resorts World Las Vegas’s 2nd annual Dim Sum Brunch at Genting Palace, I’d RSVP’d in roughly the time it takes to say “Xièxiè nĭ.” How was it? I’m just gonna say that I was so full upon leaving that I was unable to stand up straight, and as such, walked out of the restaurant slightly bent at the waist. And while it began last weekend, fear not, because it’s continuing this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, January 27-29, and is priced at $88.88 for adults, and $38.88 for kids 12 and under.
Interestingly enough, I was so preoccupied with the various stations on the expansive buffet, that I barely touched the actual Dim Sum part of the Dim Sum Brunch, which is not to say it wasn’t good. In fact, the Har Gow, Siu Mai, and Steamed BBQ Pork Bun my friend brought back to the table were all quite tasty. It’s just that the sights and smells of the other stations beckoned me more strongly.
First up, a glistening array of fresh shellfish on ice, including halved Lobsters, Crab Legs, and Shrimp. What’s not to like? This I combined with a stop by the gorgeously staged Garde Manger station, centered around a particularly Instagram-worthy arrangement of carved melons, including a watermelon featuring a bas-relief rabbit (as 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit, duh) that was doubling as a vase! Here, I grabbed some fantastic Octopus Carpaccio, a bit of Smoked Salmon, and a couple helpings of a mouthwatering Pata Negra with Poached Pear and Roquefort.
After finishing what I like to refer to as my “starter plate,” and washing it down with a tall, cool glass of Freshly-squeezed Watermelon Juice, it was back to the buffet I went. I passed over the soup and sushi stations, in favor of the entrée section. There, silver chafing dishes opened to reveal such savory treasures as Steamed Lobster in Garlic Sauce, Deep-fried Goby Fish in Spicy Sichuan Sauce, and Wok-fried Lamb Chops in Black Pepper Sauce; each of which was good enough to have merited a return trip to the buffet, if I hadn’t been running out of valuable real estate in my stomach. I’m not complaining, though, since the tradeoff was that I got to enjoy a hearty portion of the especially tender and well-seasoned Herb-crusted Prime Rib with Truffle Jus.
This was also when and where I encountered the culinary highlight of my midday feast, the Truffle Crab Meat Fried Rice, which I learned—as I was raving about it to the manager while shoveling it into my mouth via chopsticks—is the specialty dish of Chef Lok (Genting Palace’s Executive Chef). Now, you might be thinking “It’s fried rice. How great can it be?” Uh, pretty damned great. So great, in fact, that this light and fragrant and surprisingly not-at-all oily dish warrants a visit to Genting Palace, all by itself, at any time of the year (if that answers your question).
After returning to the table and devouring everything on this plate, I was full enough that I began to regret not having worn pants with an elastic waist. Oh well. Live and learn, I guess. Or perhaps, eat and expand? Whatever.
Finishing out the experience was the Dessert station, my favorites of which included the Salted Peanut Caramel Tart and the Yuzu Cheesecake. Mm-mm-mm!
Futou-tip to Chef Lok and Bart Mahoney (RWLV’s VP of F&B), and everyone on their respective teams, for bringing back this fan-favorite epicurean experience. Gōng xĭ fā cái, y’all!
