I’m a soft-touch for a worthwhile and legitimate cause that helps at-risk children. Sure, I’m a sucker for most meaningful non-profit organizations, but it’s the kids that always get me, in the end.

Maybe it’s because I ignored all of the incredible opportunities that were laid at my feet when I was growing-up (that more often than not I kicked-away or sidestepped), or maybe it’s because I never for a moment had to doubt the support of my family, or maybe three-and-a-half decades of psychiatric and psychological observation have made me hypersensitive to the fact that as much of a mess as I am, most people have it way worse. (Don’t worry Mom and Dad – I still blame you for everything: I promise!)

So, when a former dorm-mate of mine from our prep-school days (the late ‘80s... Oy! I’m gettin’ old, here), reached-out about an organization he works with, that helps out at-risk kids – well, I knew that he could deal me in.
Better still, the organization, Kids in Crisis, was having as its fundraiser, their First Annual Cards for Kids Poker Championship and Casino Night. I mean, I wouldn’t be a Shulman if I neglected to promote a proper example of how poker can literally save lives. That’d just be bad for business!

So, here’s the skinny: on Thursday, March 31st (from 6-11pm), the Harvard Club of New York City will be hosting this evening of fun and frivolity so that the good people at Kids in Crisis can continue offering the free, round-the-clock help for children, teens and parents of all socio-economic levels, dealing with any type of crisis, including abuse, neglect, family conflict and more, as they’ve done since 1978.

Last year, Kids in Crisis was able to serve and assist 6,400 children. And something that I find especially impressive is that 83¢ out of every dollar goes directly toward helping the children in their care. That’s pretty major, people.

With donation levels for the event ranging from $200 (for a Palladium sponsorship, which earns the donor Food and Drink, only) to $550 (for a Titanium sponsorship, which earns the donor Food and Drink, as well as a buy-in to the Tournament, and two chip re-buys), there’s something for every budding Phil, Phil, Phil, Jeff or Barry in your life. As it should be, the game is No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em. There’s gonna be a full open bar, plenty of hors d’oeuvres and dinner stations, as well as bragging rights amongst you and your posse.

First prize is an entry into the Harrah’s Atlantic City World Series of Poker (a $5,000 value), while second prize is a quartet of Field Box Seats (on the 3rd Base Line, no less!) to an upcoming New York Yankees game. And while I can’t say for sure, I’m willing to bet there’ll be something special for those who make it to the Final Table. So, what are you waiting for?
