When my friends, Michael McGraw and Sean McClenahan, sent me an invitation to join them in welcoming their friends Kate Aldrich and Tim Shaffer and their new home store, Patina Décor, I knew it would be worth talking about.  Hell, anyone who’s been entertained at Casa Mc2 can tell you that Michael and Sean know a thing or twelve about putting together a tasteful room; so I was confident that I’d like what I’d see.  I was, and I think you will, too.

In the simplest of terms, Patina Décor is rather like an interiors version of Imitation of Christ, in that Tim travels, to stores and shops and estates and auctions all across the country, and then (upon having the items shipped back to his workshop) impeccably refurbishes them.

And while the shop is full of the mid-century modern furnishings that are all the rage in homes from Scotch 80s to Palm Springs, given their druthers, the duo really favors the Hollywood Neo-Regency style that I so adore.

Furthermore, this is no rummage shop, filled chock-a-block with what you might find at Bric n' Brac 'n' Knick 'n' Knack ‘n’ Things (that mythological consignment tchotchke bazaar owned by Gran’s friend Hermione, on Absolutely Fabulous).  As a matter of fact, many of the sculptures, statuary, and artwork are signed pieces by renowned artists, and come with some hefty price-tags (up to and including the incredible polished brass elephant’s head priced north of $18,000).  That said, Kate and Tim keep various hutches and numerous bar carts full of colorful sets of bar glasses, and Murano glass bowls, as well as funky items like a Lucite Lazy-Susan and samovars from Turkey and Russia, that won’t break the bank, and allow customers to find things at a range of price-points.

The thing I was most impressed by was the way the couple has merchandised their store – into vignettes that allow you to view a settee or lamp or sculpture as it might appear in relation to other items in your home.  So a divan is next to a lamp, in front of a coffee table, and with a nearby tea cart topped with an Art Deco coffee service or an Atomic Era martini set with etched glasses.  Patina Décor is airy and fresh and is a thoroughly welcome addition to Downtown Las Vegas’ burgeoning design scene.

So, come by the shop’s Opening Party, this Thursday, November 8th, from 6pm – 8pm.  They’ll be serving wine and hors d’oeuvres, and I’ll be there (whatever that’s worth), along with your hosts Michael McGraw and Sean McClenahan, and the amazing couple who are Patina Décor, Kate Aldrich and Tim Shaffer.  It’s gonna be saucy, swanky, and all sorts of swell.
