Las Vegas is a great place to observe all levels of stand-up; and one comedian at the top of her game is Margaret Cho. But Cho is more than just a great stand-up; she’s become a rather ubiquitous presence, all through the pop-cult. And whether the medium is film, television, music or the written word, Cho’s been there and continues to do that.
Now, riding high on her first Emmy nomination (for her brilliant depiction of the late Korean dictator, Kim Jong-Il on NBC’s 30 Rock), and her role as the outspoken paralegal, Teri, on Lifetime’s popular Drop Dead Diva; Cho has returned, once more, to the stage, with MOTHER – her latest stand-up concert. MOTHER (sponsored in truly Choistic fashion by gay hook-up app Grindr Xtra) hits the Strip, at 10pm on Thursday, September 6th (after all of the Fashion’s Night Out brouhaha has concluded).
Recently, I was able to pick Cho’s brain in a quirky Q&A; and, as usual, her As do not disappoint. Read on:
SHULMAN: "Cher's 4th Farewell Concert" - how many times are you going, and do you think this will really be the last one?
MARGARET CHO: I am going to try to do every one. I love Cher. I hope she never stops touring.
SHULMAN: Are there any new tattoos that you'd like to tell us about?
CHO: I got [George] Washington on my left knee, and [Abraham] Lincoln on my right knee, and Ben Franklin on my back. I got real presidential, this election year.
SHULMAN: Are you looking forward to the upcoming season of RuPaul's Drag Race All-Stars?
CHO: Yes! This is my favorite show (I was a judge on Season 4). I love it, so much.
SHULMAN: What's playing on your iPod, these days?
CHO: Fiona Apple, Phoenix, and lots of Abba (I just got back from Sweden).
SHULMAN: Which (if any) aspects of Teri's personality do you wish Margaret possessed?
CHO: I like her vests. She's always got one. They're bulletproof.
SHULMAN: Tell us about what you’ve got cooking, over there, at Food Network?
CHO: It’s an awesome show called Blind Dinner Party, where strangers come together and have a party at my house. It's insane and funny and heartfelt and beautiful – like a dinner party, but also like fight club.
SHULMAN: If Circus of the Stars were ever resurrected, what act would you want to do?
CHO: I actually am old enough to have trained to be on it! I was going to be shot out of a cannon; but they ended-up canceling the show for some reason. Maybe it's too dangerous.
SHULMAN: Who makes you laugh?
CHO: Kathy Griffin, Joan Rivers, and Tig Notaro.
SHULMAN: After your experience on Dancing with the Stars, did you talk about dancing, with Abby Lee Miller and Maddie [Ziegler] from Dance Moms, when they appeared on Drop Dead Diva?
CHO: OMG! I didn't meet them, but I was dying to! I need some dance help!
