In the third season of Will & Grace (in the episode “Poker? I Don’t Even Like Her”), Karen asks her frenemy Candy Pruitt “Is 60 sexy?” Well, if she had been in the presence of Lynn Weidner, this past weekend at her 60th Birthday Weekend, in Los Cabos, Mexico, the answer would’ve been a self-evident “Hells yeah!”
The weekend, conceived by Lynn and husband Bill, and executed seamlessly by Destinations by Design, officially kicked-off with Friday’s Fuchsia Fiesta. Held at The Mercado at the El Dorado Golf & Beach Club, there was a delicious buffet featuring chicken, steak, and barbequed lobster tails (each the size of a baby’s arm).
Guests were asked to wear pink, and – with Sue Lowden as emcee - performed karaoke-style tributes to the birthday girl.
The line-up included numbers by her gal-pals from her Miss New Jersey days (who put together a fabulous choreographed number), her Miss America buddies (who, led by Gloria Fine, sang a rendition of “These Boots are Made for Walking”); son James (who sang Looking Glass’ “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” which was kind of the Rutgers theme song while Lynn went there); Whitney duBoef (whose “Rock-a-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody” always brings the house down); Christy Molasky with Paul Lowden on keyboards (who always raise the bar); and a reworked, kooky version of “Theme from Shaft” with Christy Molasky, Dale Wynn, and Jodi Fonfa as the Hot Buttered Soul to my Isaac Hayes (which, when Paul Lowden, Jr. came to tell me how entertaining it was, caused Michael McGraw to exclaim “Entertaining?!?! It was like watching an Amtrak train go off-the-rails, at 200 miles per hour!”)
After the shows, a DJ took over, and played contemporary hits while the revelers danced the night away.
The following day found many of us recovering beachside, in the El Dorado’s infinity pool, diving into the surf, and (in a couple of cases) paddle-boarding.
More to come, when I get into Saturday’s star-studded Swingin’ Sixties party – but that’s next time!
