When I first heard that there was a new gay nightclub in town, named SHARE, my first thought was that it was a particularly funny use of the homonym for “Cher” and was amused. Turns out I was wrong about the name, but was about to have my socks knocked-off by the incredible management style that sets this club heads and tails above the rest, in a town not known for its gay clubs.
As I’ve gotten older and wider and married, I’ve found that I spend far less time in nightclubs than I used to. But this past Friday night, Jacob and I were joining our friends Noey and Billy Richardson for dinner and a show (at The Barrymore, and The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, respectively). So, when I received a text from Sean Dunn, the GM (and self-described “Director of Debauchery”) at SHARE Nightclub, inviting me to come to the kick-off event for the club’s new Friday night party, “Stripper Circus” featuring legendary pornographeur/safe-sex advocate/”Wrap it Up!” spokesperson, Chi Chi LaRue as the Ringmaster – well, I didn’t have to be asked twice. Furthermore, Jacob and Noey were up for checking-out the new venue.
Sean gave us the grand tour, and I’ve gotta say, this is one gay club that’s got its act together. The doormen and valets are respectful, the servers are cute and conversant, the bartenders pour stiff drinks, the venue is clean and doesn’t smell of the olfactory bouquet of cigarette smoke, lube and poppers that many of the seedier gay clubs do, and there is a very good ratio of gay and straight patrons. Actually, there were at least four bachelorette parties in full effect, that night; I’m sure for the same reason many women prefer the men in gay porn – they’re just better looking. This is especially handy, when one takes into account that the venue is, in fact, Las Vegas' only gay nightclub also zoned as a strip club.
It can really be broken down this simply: SHARE does it right. They’re off-strip (on Wynn Road between West Tropicana Avenue and West Flamingo Road), and as such made the decision not to charge a cover, recognizing that out-of-town patrons have to pony-up for cab-fare. Also, the various weekly themes-parties – including “Cotton Tail Mondays” (an industry night with a twist); and “The Biz” with Edie (the Mistress of Ceremonies for Cirque du Soleil’s Zumanity), recreating the louche vibe of legendary cabarets like NY’s late-great Bar d’O, on Wednesdays – are all quite creatively thought-out and executed with flair.
Friday night was a hoot, and all three of us had a blast. I ducked into the DJ Booth for a quick kiki with Chi Chi. It was a smorgasbord of every conceivable type of man (and woman) with twinks, bears, daddies, silver foxes, stylistas, jocks, drags, and more – as far as the eye could see. And what about the go-go boys? Well, placed as we were at Chi Chi’s table, with its balls-eye view of the stage; our eyes didn’t need to see far, at all.
