I love hearing about new products. When I am turned-on to one that is fun, clever, well-packaged, and part of a lifestyle brand, I’m eager to try it. Then, if and when I find that such a product lives up to the hype, I feel duty-bound to pass it along to you.
Such is the case with Buddha Balm, the premium soy lip balm. Now, even when living in moist climates like Seattle and New Orleans, I was occassionally prone to getting chapped lips. Then, while living in places like Tucson and Las Vegas, it became a bit more problematic. So, when I first heard about Buddha Balm, I’ll admit, I was reticent. “It’s a lip balm. How great can it be?” I thought. Then I figured “Who knows? It could be fantastic… I’ll give it a try.” So I did.
Well, color me delighted (not to mention in possession of moist and supple lips). Not only does Buddha Balm work, but its four flavors – concocted with grown-up palates in mind – are rather exotic and particularly tasty. To wit, Lychee Pomegranate, Mandarin Orange Ginger, Burnt Sugar Fig, and (my favorite) Crushed Mint Pineapple, are a far cry from the Dr. Pepper-flavored Bonnie Bell Lip Smacker of your youth.
Buddha Balm is handcrafted and soy-based. It’s free of preservatives, paraben, and petroleum. Also, Buddha Balm is saturated with vitamins, essential fatty acids, and nutrients; “contains powerful healing and protective properties that are as good for your soul as they are for your lips;” and contains as its key ingredients Soybean Oil, Coconut Oil, Beeswax, Vitamin E, Shea Butter, and Zinc Oxide.
But what does all this gobbledy-gook mean for a lip balm?
Well, petroleum (in addition to lacking any healing properties) can act as an irritant when coating the skin, bringing about the symptoms it is meant to heal; while paraben is a low-cost chemical preservative widely-used in cosmetics, that has been found to be carcinogenic in high doses.
Furthermore, beeswax conditions the lips, while locking-in moisture; vitamin E slows oxidation and inhibits premature skin-aging; and zinc oxide (a natural compound) blocks UV radiation, prevents sunburn, and also slows aging of the skin.
Curious about the Buddha Balm slogan “Karma in a Lip Balm” I was directed to the company’s mission, which states that Buddha Balm aims “To be relevant in the lives of our users and inspire people to realize their potential and their dreams. How can lip balm do that? It’s simple: when you feel good, you do good.”
Well, I’m not sure how much good I’m doing, but I’ll tell you this – my lips feel terrific!
And where does one acquire this magical salve? Until the company’s e-Commerce site goes live, next week, you can find Buddha Balm in Las Vegas at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, the Stuff Store and the Palms Shop at Palms Casino Resort, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, TAO Asian Bistro, and (get this) Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. Now that’s some clever placement! It’s also available in select cities at retailers such as Ricky’s, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Kitson, and Bristol Farms.
