I just adore people who get it – whatever “it” is. Judy Stone, the Director of Marketing for CRYSTALS at CityCenter gets it – and I just dig that, about her. So, earlier this spring, at an event I’d helped put together for VOGUE at Fendi’s boutique at CRYSTALS, I turned to Judy, and over my glass of champagne, gave her props for having had the foresight to book Fitz and the Tantrums to headline last year’s Fashion’s Night Out event, weeks before they lit up after some very good late night appearances. Then I asked what she had up her sleeve for this year’s affair. She said that she was thinking of hiring a well-known stylist to do a live fashion presentation and mentioned a couple of names. I asked if she’d considered Patricia Field (the award-winning stylist and designer from Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada, Ugly Betty, Confessions of a Shopaholic, etc.); and the rest, as they say, is history.
I delve into Field’s myriad accomplishments, bona fides, and history, as well as her role at CRYSTALS’ upcoming FNO’12, in the September 2012 issue of VEGAS/RATED (on newsstands, now); but in the meantime, while she was working in Sao Paulo, Brazil, I chatted with Pat. After we got caught-up on the basic pleasantries (Hey… How’s Sao Paulo..? What do you think of Brazil..? Blah, blah. blah), Pat answered a few questions for me that I hereby pass along to you.
SHULMAN: Your connection to Las Vegas goes back 25 years to when you were working on Crime Story. What sorts of inspiration do you draw from this city? What’s your fondest Las Vegas moment?
PATRICIA FIELD: My fondest Las Vegas moment, aside from my memorable experience working on the TV series Crime Story, was experiencing living in Las Vegas for more than just a long weekend. For me, it was waking up in the morning to the awe inspiring vistas of mountains and sky, particularly the way the dimensions changed as the seasons passed, the position of the sun to the earth changed, and all of these collaborated to create God’s magical light show.
S: Tell me about your signature red hair.
PF: My red hair is my friend, as it loves and flatters my skin, like no other color. My precise hue is achieved by blending the formulas for “Poppy” and “Pillar Box Red” (both by Manic Panic).
S: Has technology made today’s customer savvier than in the past?
PF: Technology has provided unlimited access to information, and as such, provides the opportunity for savvy for all who participate.
S: You’ve managed to stay on the cutting-edge of fashion for more than 40 years, all the while imbuing every project you undertake with the essence of Patricia Field. What’s your secret? And how would you describe that “essence” of you?
PF: My secret is: Love what you do. I am essentially inquisitive, interested, analytical and friendly – and it’s this combination that keeps me on the cutting-edge.
