RuPaul’s Drag Race has, over the past four seasons, taken the best parts of Survivor, Project Runway, American Idol, and America’s Next Top Model; put them in a blender; and produced a delicious frappe of entertaining reality television, in glorious Technicolor.  Now, a dozen of her finest girls have returned, and it's a faux-fur-flying race to the finish, on RuPaul's All Stars Drag Race

Ever the Ru-fectionist, the host/ess is always shown in prime form.  This means that hair and make-up is attended to by Mathu Andersen (the multi-talented glamazon from Down Under is also, at present, the loveliest bearded-lady in the biz); custom show-stopper gowns by Zaldy; and there’s just the faintest whisper of Vaseline rubbed on the camera lens.

In the remaining five hour-long episodes, the contestants will continue to be judged in the now-familiar categories of “Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent” with the added twist of “Synergy” (as the contestants are now competing, in teams of two).  The winner will be crowned “Queen of All Queens” and receive a one-of-a-kind vacation, a lifetime supply of MAC Cosmetics, and a cash-prize of $100,000.

Of the half-dozen teams, there are two for which I’m particularly routing – Team Rujubee (consisting of the intense Raven, and hysterical Jujubee) and Team Latrila (pairing witty Manila Luzon with the magical Latrice Royale).

Perhaps the most enduring thing that RuPaul has accomplished over the course of his multi-decade career (besides always looking fabulous), has been teaching the importance of self-empowerment.   Ru’s battle cry of “Learn to love yourself, 'cause if you can't love yourself, how the hell you gonna love somebody else?” has become known to his fans, worldwide, and the lesson is something he has tried to impart each season to viewers and contestants, alike.

In the sage words of Season 4’s Miss Congeniality, the “large and in-charge, chunky yet funky” Latrice Royale, “I want people to realize that it’s okay to make mistakes.  It’s okay to fall-down.  Get up!  Look sickening…  And make them eat it!”
