How to Turn Your Scheduling Dilemma into a Double-Dipping Delight

Scheduling Ruvo 1

I’ve been deluged with telephone calls, voicemails and e-mails for the past week or so from many of the more active members of the Las Vegas philanthropic and social communities.  Everyone, it seems, is all a-flutter because two of the city’s most popular and well-supported organizations are holding big events on the same night, at the same time.  Adding to the mishegas, the two events are being held on opposite sides of town.

Here’s the skinny:  this Saturday (May 22nd), from 6pm to 10pm, the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and Keep Memory Alive are celebrating The Grand Opening of the Frank Gehry-designed building in Downtown Las Vegas’ Symphony Park (aka Union Park) area.  Invited guests are invited to come early or stay late; with formal remarks being given at 7:30pm.  Upscale casual attire is requested (translation: jackets and nice jeans, no ties, cute spring dresses, color).

Also taking place this Saturday (still May 22nd), also from 6pm to 10pm, Opportunity Village is holding Imagine – A Celebration of Opportunity • A Concert under the Stars at the Ralph & Betty Engelstad Campus in the southwest part of town.  Cocktails are called for 6pm, the concert begins promptly at 8pm (and will feature many of Las Vegas’ more prominent citizens dancing, singing, and having a good ole time), and the après concert Dessert Party is slated for 9ish.  A silent auction featuring one-of-a-kind custom-designed celebrity guitars will be ongoing, and the requested attire is “cool concert chic” (translation: skinny jeans, boots, and lots of black, dangling silver and gold jewelry)

So, for all of you who have sought my council, here ‘tis…

I’ve decided to let the music of Petula Clark be my guide.  So, I’m gonna “listen to the music of the traffic in the city,” then “linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty,” and start my evening Downtown, at the Ruvo Center; arriving at 6pm and staying for roughly an hour or so.  Then I’m gonna get in my car and schlep up to Opportunity Village’s Engelstad Campus, arriving sometime around 7:30pm.  I figure this will allow me enough time to peruse the silent auction, and get in a few bids before grabbing a seat for the concert at 8pm.  As Petula queries, “How can you lose?”
