The Scissor Sisters performed in town, recently, to promote the release of their fourth studio album, Magic Hour.  The concert was – as one would expect – fierce.  The Sisters always put on a highly energetic show, and this was no exception; and included a raging opening set by Rye-Rye.

What really set this experience apart from the de rigueur concert was that my pals and I were cozily ensconced in the House of Blues’ James Brown Sky Box, a decidedly posh affair, complete with velvet and leather couches, with a Jonathan Adler-esque stag’s head in white ceramic, an autographed guitar displayed in the coffee-table, closed-circuit television showing the performance on stage, and our own pair of waitresses who were like Janets-on-the-Spot.

There are two great things about a VIP Box, that held true for the James Brown Sky Box.  First, there’s the view.  We were literally two stories directly above stage-right.  While given my druthers, I’d have built it slightly in front of the stage, but despite my wildest dreams of becoming a modern-day Statler or Waldorf (my two favorite Muppets), schnorrers can’t be choosers.  Second – and I know I’m gonna take some flack for this, but I’m keepin’ it real, folks – there’s always that visceral thrill one gets (admit it, you know what I’m talking about) when looking-out over the hoi polloi, and observing them looking back at you, wondering “Who the Hell is he, and how come he’s sitting up there?”

Those are easy-enough questions to answer.  The “who” is whoever happens to be up there.  The “how come” is that someone was willing to fork-over the fee for the room, because that evening’s act didn't want it.  Figure the James Brown Sky Box will run you $800 and up, depending on the performer, over and above the cost of tickets.

There were six in our group, but the room can easily accommodate twice that many.  And if you look at it as a $150/person proposition, it’s a bargain at twice the price!
