The concept of “great” sushi restaurants in a city surrounded by desert and mountains is kind of laughable.  Thanks to such modern contrivances as air shipments and refrigeration trucks, however, Las Vegas is on the receiving-end of some of the world’s highest quality fresh seafood as is to be found anywhere.

Such is the case with Naked-Fish’s Sushi and Grill – one of my preferred spots in the Southwest part of the Valley.  With a pages-long list of specialty rolls, and delicious seafood plates, the restaurant is a favorite (for lunch and dinner) of the residents of Spanish Trail and Canyon Gate.

Located in a strip-mall on South Durango Drive (between Flamingo Road and Twain Avenue), this little gem was first brought to my attention by Camille and Larry Ruvo; and while I treat most people’s advice as something to file away for a rainy day, in matters gastronomic, I look on imparted words of wisdom from the Ruvos as if it was investment advice from E.F. Hutton.

So, I went.  Then I went back.  Then I went back, again.  And now I go all the time.  The people are friendly, the atmosphere is casual, the seating is comfortable, and the tables are big.  And the food – well, it’s pretty damned terrific.

When Jacob and I go, we tend to order a bunch of rolls for the table, and an entrée each.  I like the Asian Lamb Chop, while he swears by the Grilled Miso Salmon Dinner.

Our three favorite rolls are the Lobster Roll (lobster inside and on top of the roll, topped with garlic mayo), the Tiger & Dragon Roll (shrimp tempura topped with spicy tuna, then topped with fresh-water eel; served with eel sauce and chrunchies), and the Kiss Me 2 Roll (shrimp tempura topped with blue crab and garlic mayo; baked and served with Kochi Kochi sauce).  Also, if it's available that day (NF only offers items that are fresh, fresh, fresh), the Fresh Spring Roll (shrimp and snow crab with original sesame dressing) is not to be missed.

In addition to lunch and dinner, Naked-Fish’s also offers a fantastic Happy Hour menu, everyday, from 3pm-6pm and (because it is Las Vegas, after all) from 10pm-2am.

Actually, this article has made me a bit peckish.  Fortunately, I know exactly what I’ve got a hankering for (and it’s only 2 blocks away).  Yum!
