Since 1961, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has gathered the best in film and television together in the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Known in the business as the “fun” award show, and an accurate guide as to how the Oscar-wind is blowing, we know it as the Golden Globes.
Now, certainly, it’s nice to see actors and actresses and producers and directors getting loaded on Moët & Chandon (and, in the case of Paul Giamatti, Godiva chocolates); but when all is said and done, it’s really all about who wore what.
2011 will go down as the Year of the Shoulder. Big-shoulders, off-the-shoulder, one-shoulder, and bare-shoulder looks were all the rage.
Jewel-tones were big, but oddly, jewels were not. Too many ladies need to flog their stylists, but some of them were spot-on and looked lovely. And that, Folks, is what it’s all about.
Following are my favorite looks of the night, from the red carpet; as well as (quite) a few that should’ve stayed on the hanger.
I apologize in advance if some of this seems gratuitously bitchy, but I calls it like I sees it.

![]() Amy Adams in Marchesa She let the complexity of the laser-cut gown do the talking for her. It wouldn’t have killed her to have donned a nice cuff or big ring, though… |
![]() Angelina Jolie in Versace Atelier Shoulders! Jewel-tone! Learn it! |
![]() Anne Hathaway in Armani Privé Shoulders! Metallic is the new neutral. Anne looks as bright and shiny as a new copper penny! (And I love a good monochromatic look.) |
![]() Christina Aguilera in Zuhair Murad She’s a walking-stick and a big hat from being Mae West! (And that's not a good thing...) |
|
![]() Emma Stone in Calvin Klein Collection Nice. Inoffensive. Boring. Blah. Love the hair, though! |
![]() Eva Longoria in Zac Posen She’s just too short for such a wide hem. It’s "Ursula the Sea Witch" on Dancing with the Stars! |
![]() Hailee Steinfeld in Prubal Gurung Age-appropriately simple without being too sweet. |
|
![]() Heather Morris in Lorena Sarbu The Glee beauty’s sparkly nude gown was glorious; and paired to perfection with earrings from Diamond in the Rough. |
![]() Helena Bonham Carter in Vivienne Westwood THIS is the woman who’s broken up some of Hollywood’s best couples? Why? She’s neither punk nor artsy. She’s just a mess. |
|
![]() January Jones in Versace I don't know if she's trying to look like a flapper or audition for a Vegas review. Regardless, she can't turn back time and she's not Cher. The Veronica Lake hair is nice, though. Not particularly creative, but nice. Next! |
![]() Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad Don't be fooled by the rocks she's got... Besides, it's tough to wear white in January, but Jen-Pez pulls it off with flair to spare. |
![]() Julie Bowen in Tadashi Shoji Classy, clever, and fabulously femme; Modern Family’s MILF is major! |
![]() Kaley Cuoco in Katharine Kidd The Big Bang Theory beauty looks lovely in this multi-tiered confection from fashion's favorite southern belle. The Chopard sparklers don't hurt, either... |
![]() Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen Kelly O gave one of the night's highlights as a punk princess in a one-shouldered look that brought to mind Grace Kelly at Mudd Club, with regal hair and make-up. Werk! |
![]() Kyra Sedgwick in Emilio Pucci I’m just wild about saffron, and Krya, and this pleated Pucci number that shows-off The Closer’s dynamite figure. The Indian jewels add just the right ethnic pizzazz. |
![]() Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta Jacob thought this look was dreamy, but I think she’s a decade too young for the dress. And spending 5 hours to make your hair look like you’ve been sailing all night is just so 2008! |
![]() Mila Kunis in Vera Wang The eyes have it, and Mila’s eyes are the best. And her hair is marvelous event-hair. As for the gown, the color is gorge and the ruching is major, but it should've stopped there. |
![]() Natalie Portman in Viktor & Rolf Apparently I’ve been wrong all these years: Diamonds don't make everything better (Sorry Tiffany & Co.). She should've opted for something with rubies (or garnets); or foregone a necklace altogether and worn some major earrings. |
|
![]() Olivia Wilde in Marchesa Now THIS is how a gorgeous young actress should look at an award show. The glam gown goes great with her coloring and doesn’t need any further adornment. Brava! |
![]() Piper Perabo in Oscar de la Renta It’s elegant and it’s lovely. In a word: Oscar. Perfect if you’re having cocktails on the Upper Eastside; but a bit of a snooze on the red-carpet. I can’t decide if the bow is terrific or matronly. Fortunately, the pulled-back hair and big red lips are great. |
![]() Sandra Bullock in Jenny Packham I soooo wanted to be happy for Sandra, but this whole look made me sad. Like listening to Claudine Longet sing “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today” sad. Tres triste. :( |
![]() Sarah Hyland in Max Azria Atelier Fun, age-appropriate, and pretty. Of course, you'd have to really try to make the Modern Family looker appear anything but fresh and fabulous. (If I had to find something to k'vetch about, I'd say the necklace overwhelms the petite beauty...) |
![]() Scarlett Johanssen in Elie Saab Methinks Miss Scarlett just wanted to feel pretty and girlie in her first foray as a recently single gal, and this romantic flesh-toned lace gown was just what the doctor ordered, with the nipped waist and plunging neck off-setting the antique-cut sleeves. |
![]() Shaun Robinson in Oday Shakar Before tonight I'd never heard of this woman or this designer, but the two work red-carpet magic together. SR + OS = Wow! |
![]() Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang It's just about impossible to imagine this lady in anything that doesn't look like it comes with a placard above it that says "Va-va-voom!" We love you, Sofia! |
