Continued from Part 1

It’s almost thirty years, now!

It’s really whizzed by, and you don’t see a difference.  I mean, you aren’t naïve, anymore.  I feel really privileged to be where we are, and to have a following.  We’ve always made “high quality” music, and we really care about what we do.  So we try to give value to our fans.

And I feel really great – I mean, to have someone like Vince, because he’s very down-to-Earth (which I used to think was a bit of a show, of his; but it wasn’t).  We’re both very similar.  Mind you, I’m actually quite shy, off-stage; and so is he – but he’s more uncomfortable in the limelight than I am.  But he kind of keeps me grounded, really.

Would you say that it’s the caliber and quality of your music that’s lead to your longevity as a band?

I think so.  Definitely.  I mean, I love being a singer, and when we’re recording, I like the diction to be really clear, so people can hear what we’re singing about.  I’ve embraced my inner-choirboy, I suppose.  I love doing backing vocals; all my own harmonies, and things (mostly, you know?).  I remember reading these reviews that were all “How come Erasure never says who their backing singers are?” and I thought “Ha, ha!  We haven’t got any, because I do it, myself!”  And Vince is the same way with his music.  He’s a genius about what he’s doing.  And he takes forever doing it, but it’s because he doesn’t compromise.

Okay.  So carrying-on in that vein – twenty, forty, fifty years from now…  Which of your songs do you think is really going to stand the test of time?

It’s quite strange, but already “Blue Savannah” is a great song.  “A Little Respect” is kind of an anthem, and “Always” seems to have taken on a life of its own.  We’re in good stead, really.  I think that “Sacred” (from the new album) is going to be one of those, as well.
