I’m not a particularly spontaneous person.  So, imagine Jacob’s surprise when I told him “You’d better get dressed, because we’re going to go see Nicki Minaj and Britney Spears, tonight!”

Seeing as we’re in Vegas, he assumed they were hosting a party at a nightclub (as it turns out, he was almost right, since they were each hosting concert after parties – Nicki at Gallery Nightclub, and Britney at Nikki Beach), but once I explained that they were performing, in concert, that night, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, he was beyond psyched.

“Who did you call to get the tickets?” he asked, which was a pretty safe query, knowing my m.o. as he does.

“Well, as it turns out, I called the box office on a whim; and lo’ and behold, they had one only pair of amazing tickets in the best section – so I bought ‘em!”

We got ready, lickety-split, and headed to the MGM.  We decided that Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill was the perfect spot for a pre-concert dinner.  There’s nothing worse than a heavy meal when you’re en route to a dance-your-ass-off concert.  I ordered the Chinois Chicken Salad (a longtime favorite), while Jake ordered that night’s fish special - Halibut (which he said was fantastic).  The service was friendly and upbeat, and the food hit just the right spots.

For whatever reason, the concert was running early, that night (have you ever heard of such a thing?), so when we entered the Arena, Nicki was already encouraging the audience to “Check It Out” (and they were doing so, enthusiastically).

Nicki was fun and energetic and left the crowd hollering for more.  There was a 45 minute set change, and then Britney came on.

I know I haven’t always been particularly supportive of Ms. Spears over the years, but let me say this: Britney Spears is a fantastic entertainer.  But don’t take my word for it…  The photos (and video) don’t lie.

The concert was a blast.  The movie element was clever, the costumes were sparkly, the staging was great, and the singing was better than expected.  What’s more, I think I might have burned off a pound or two while dancing.  Now, that’s a good concert!
