There’s just something so damned likeable about Brandon Flowers.  Maybe it’s his preternaturally youthful countenance, or that the way in which he channels the best of the ‘80s really works (his charming covers of Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” and Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes” earned more than a few nods of approval – the latter being one of this writer’s go-to karaoke jams)?  Perhaps it’s that – for Las Vegans – he represents the hometown boy done good; or that he obviously loves being on stage?  Who knows?  What I do know is he makes great music and puts on one terrific concert.

I’ve seen Flowers as a solo performer, at Surrender Nightclub at Encore; at the Las Vegas Hilton’s Shimmer Cabaret; and most recently at The Bunkhouse Saloon, in Downtown Las Vegas.  Like the previous two concerts I’d attended, it was a very intimate show: I’ll guess fewer than two hundred people, and of those I’m sure at least 98% were local.  Oh!  And if you should happen to find yourself attending a concert, at the Bunkhouse Saloon – try the Deep-Fried Pickles with Ranch: you’ll thank me!

I should add that, from the way people were speaking, one might think that an ordinance was passed, imbuing Las Vegans with the inalienable right to speak of Flowers by his first name.  Oh, don’t give me that look: I don’t make the rules!  I just write about stuff.  Anyhow – back to Brandon. 

As much of America would find out a couple nights later, when he and his terrific backing band and singers performed “Can’t Deny My Love” – co-written by drummer Darren A. Beckett, the single brings to my mind what might’ve happened had Jan Hammer collaborated with Kate Bush, on the “Miami Vice Theme” (read: dark, brooding, sexy, pulsing) – Team Brandon sounds fantastic; and whether performing classics by The Killers, the freshest of Flowers, or a repurposed ‘80s-era gem, they are performing in top condition.
