Seven years ago, I was invited to attend a Player’s Ball honoring Ice-T and his wife, Coco.  As a personal guest of the promoter, Paulie Mac (with whom I had the pleasure of co-judging a DJ contest), I was seated at the head table and totally got into it.  I wore duchesse satin.  I ate chicken wings.  I drank Hennessy.  I wore big jewelry.  Granted, with the exception of the Cognac, the first of the Four Questions comes to mind  (you know…  Ma nishtana halaila hazeh mikol halelot?); but I was loving it.

I looked-on, watching Ice (the personification of “O-G”) and the curvaceous Coco as they pulled-up in a Mercedes SLS AMG Gullwing, accepted their trophy, and worked the room. And when they came over to where I was, I wasted no time in chatting-up Coco.  Following is an excerpt from my recounting of the night, in one of my first essays for VEGAS.

“[Coco’s] most amazing asset is that brain she’s got in her head.  As gorgeous as she is (and let me put it this way: If you could put Coco into pill form, Pfizer would go broke.  I’m amazed she doesn’t set-off the overhead sprinklers when she walks into a room), she’s even smarter; ‘cause she recognizes that people often discount what’s above a lady’s neck for what she’s got below.  A word to the wise: Don’t even try to dis this Miss.  Ice has one rule: In order to get to him, people must go through Coco, first.”

"Playing with Ice-T & Coco at the Player’s Ball” by Michael Shulman – VEGAS / September 2004

Ice was charismatic and Coco was the proverbial stick of Land o’ Lakes.  What impressed me the most; however (although I couldn’t have known it, at the time), was that whenever our paths have crossed since then (more often than you might expect) they‘ve both been delightful.

It just goes to show you, regardless of the labels placed upon them – gangster, player, hustler or, vixen – Ice and Coco know that all the slick and smooth is cool, but there’s nothing fiercer than representing with grace, and class.  Recognize!
