A Trio of Online 'Zines to Keep You Current 09/21/2012

I like a good e-zine. I should: I publish one. But which ones do I read? Well, there are any number of .coms and websites whose newsletters and updates appear in my Inbox with unnerving frequency, and while I read them all, there are three that I most enjoy.

FLAVORPILL – The one I read most frequently features the most clever lists, such as “Bruce Springsteen’s 63 Finest Lyrics on His 63rd Birthday” and "23 of the Best Dance-Numbers in TV History" - plus they’ve got a great dedicated Las Vegas page (curated by Las Vegas-based editor, Melissa Arseniuk). Recently, for instance, I found-out that the Onyx Theatre has been throwing a viewing party on Tuesday nights, with two classic episodes of Charlie’s Angels with costume contests, prizes, free popcorn, and cocktails, Cocktails, and COCKTAILS! I like it…

THRILLIST – A good-news only site, with no critiques, no reviews, just recommendations. Where Thrillist really excels is with kooky and unique and under-the-radar shouts-out – “absinthe-only cocktail spots, eateries that dish up BBQ Rattlesnake Salad and Reindeer in Bourbon Sauce, and ATMs whose currency is marijuana…” The writing is fresh and hip (albeit, sometimes trying a little too hard to be so), and funny. Unfortunately, the Las Vegas edition is only published weekly; unlike those for major metropolitan cities like Minneapolis, San Diego, Boston, and Portland, as well as the de rigueur Los Angeles, London, New York, and Chicago that receive the daily treatment.

URBAN DADDY – Not so much an online magazine as a quintet of beautifully produced online ‘zines that are published together in a savvy manner, Urban Daddy is slick and chock full o’ facts. UD’s downside is that everything reads as though it came straight off of a press release. But, there’s enough good info to make it worth the read (based on the headline).

Please note that you probably won't owe anything after US-Canadian tax treaties are reviewed, Foreign Earned Income Exclusions are taken into consideration and Foreign Tax Credits are applied. You are also going to need to report any bank or financial accounts you have outside of the US through an FBAR. If your accounts have totaled more than $10,000 USD at any given time during a year, you must turn in the FBAR to The Treasury Department.
