I was never very good at roller skating. I’m not sure why this bothered me, and I’m even less sure why it bothers me, still. Peer pressure, I guess… Regardless, growing-up in the ‘70s and ‘80s there was a lot of skating to be done, and I sucked at it. Oh, I loved the music (“Good Times” by Chic, “Boogie Wonderland” by Earth Wind and Fire, “Fame” by Irene Cara…), and the lights, and the people, and even the crappy snack-bar food – but I was awful on those skates.
Imagine my surprise (chagrin?) to find that roller discos have been popping-up around the country. Not in time to save The Roxy, sadly; but it’s been a downright renaissance, all the same.
Enter Down & Derby, the self-proclaimed “best party on wheels,” which has taken-up a monthly residency at RAIN Nightclub at Palms Casino Resort (next event – January 21st). After lubing-up their wheels in cities such as New York, Pomona, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh, this series of “throwback events” that is being produced by Vince Masi and Richard Alexander has been killing it by having attendees dress-up in fashions from the disco era and gussying-up the venue with apropos décor.
This is one feel-good affair that keeps everyone in high spirits. Just ask N9NE Group Vice President, Michael Fuller, who admits to grinning “Anytime someone brings-up ‘Double D.’”
So, pull-on your leg-warmers, get-out that Champions sweatshirt with the Flashdance neckline, and lace-up your skates – but don’t worry if you (like most) don’t have the appropriate footwear, because D&D will rent to you from their stock of 500 pairs.
Am I the only one getting Xanadu flashbacks?
