If you took Barbie, Britney, Beyoncé, and Bananrama; mixed them all together and put the resulting blend into a Hong Kong-born/San Francisco-raised hottie with voice, face, body, moves, talent, and charisma, you’d end-up with CoCo Lee. Known as the “Princess of Asian Pop” the trilingual Lee (her official English name is Ferren Lee-Kelly), was raised and educated in California, and after graduating from high school, she flew to Hong Kong to see her sisters in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant. While there she entered and took First Runner-Up in the 12th Annual New Talent Singing Awards. The rest, as they say, is history.

Now, odds are that you're thinking “Seriously, Shulman – why do I care?” Well, this weekend, as the only US dates on her East to West World Tour (that includes shows in Australia, Canada, Malaysia, and China), CoCo Lee will be performing at the intimate Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas. And if you’re still left wondering why you should be remotely interested in catching this concert, click on the video, below, to view scenes from her recent concert in Taiwan at the Taipei Arena. The music is great, in and of itself, but when you add the elaborate sets, dancers, aerialists, and frequent wardrobe changes (including Eve in the Garden of Eden; the imperial concubine, Yang Guifei; the futuristic Pharaoh Queen; and Barbie on the catwalk); well, the show just has “Viva Las Vegas” written all over it – and what’s more American than that?

Singing in multiple languages, including English, Cantonese, and Mandarin Chinese, Lee was named Miss Chinese America in 1991, and is perhaps best-known Stateside for performing her Oscar-nominated song “A Love Before Time” from the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, at the 73rd Annual Academy Awards. Her music and videos have been so erotic at times, that some have been banned in China. Last year, E! Entertainment Television ranked her #15 on their list of the 25 Sexiest Pop Divas (placing her ahead of such well-known performers as Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Minogue, Ashanti, Fergie, Eve, and JessicaSimpson).

By the by, if CoCo looks familiar, it might be due to her having been one of Asia’s most sought-after celebrities for product endorsements, for the past fifteen years. She’s modeled in major campaigns for toys (Barbie), beauty (ElizabethArden, Wella, Nivea, La Mer), watches and jewelry (De Beers, Omega, Cartier), fragrance (Tommy Girl by Tommy Hilfiger), and high fashion (Chanel). As a matter of fact, Chanel named CoCo their first ever “Asian-Pacific Celebrity Ambassadress” which is only fitting, since she received her nickname as a result of her fondness for the exclusive brand.
CoCo Lee
In the words of actor/comedian Todd Sherry, “I’d like a cup of hot CoCo Lee: That’d be delicious!” (And as our generation’s answer to Paul Lynde and Charles Nelson Reilly, he should know!)
