A Few of My Favorite Hong Kong Looks

Hong Kong face mask lady
Swine Flu = Bad

Hong Kong.  The name has always conjured up images for me of mystery and contradiction.  Asian grandeur and old-world charm mixed with continental flair and metropolitan mayhem.  Upon first impression, I wasn’t that far off, but I was in no way prepared for the sheer scale of the place.  Even after all my years of living in New York and visiting the grand capitols of Europe – not to mention the cumulative decades spent in my adopted home of Las Vegas – I still wasn’t ready for Lady HK.  She has blown my socks off, and I’ve still got a few days to go!

One of my favorite things about Hong Kong is the style.  At once avant-garde and theatrical, sometimes to the point of comedy, the looks I’ve seen here run the gamut from fashionista to fashion victim to couture clown, and everything in between.

Hong Kong fur jacket lady
Not sure which I love more, the fur jacket or the hair...

For instance, on one city block, you can buy a real Hermès Kelly bag, a “genuine” fake Hermès Kelly bag, and a fake Hermès Kelly bag – as well as see the sorts of ladies (and lady-ish men) who wear each.

Hong Kong makes Canal Street look like Coney Island.  These photos represent a few of my favorite looks.  There's the de rigeuer facemask being sported by everywoman HK; a haughty ex-pat of Eurotrashian descent sporting a fabulous fur jacket and wondering what has held-up her driver; and some incredible bespectacled freakshow wearing multiple layers (and various prints) in vibrant technicolor, with trainers.

Enjoy!

Ahhh, air pollution!
Didn't Michael Jackson (RIP) try to bring the facemask trend stateside? If he couldn't do it, no one can!
