There are really very few nominees that I care about at the Grammys, but it’s always a lot of fun to watch the live performances and check-out the outlandish ensembles (didn’t Beyoncé do, like eight wardrobe changes a few years back?). And who can forget the 2000 Grammys, when JenPez wore that amazing cut-down-to-there sheer green jungle-print Atelier Versace number (with the crystal-studded panties) that was a how-to-guide for wardrobe stylists everywhere on the use of double-sided tape?
Anyhoo, I am hoping that a few artists, whose music I enjoy, win in their respective categories…
Taylor Swift
The following is not a list of who I think will win in any particular category, nor even artists who I think deserve to win – just who I would like to see win. Otherwise, I’d just agree with the pundits, say “Taylor Swift” and be done with it. PS – j’adore the idea of Taylor Swift (her look, her sound, her acting on this week’s rerun of a very cool episode of CSI:Crime Scene Investigation, etc.) but she’s just not my favorite in any of these instances.
Beyoncé
The two best concerts I attended in 2009 were those of Lady Gaga (at Palms Casino Resort) and Beyoncé (at Wynn Las Vegas). So, it’s probably not too surprising that I’m hoping Lady Gaga wins in at least one of the biggies (her ubiquitous single “Poker Face” is n-n-n-nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and BestDance Recording, while her breakout album The Fame is nominated for Album of the Year and BestElectronic/Dance Album). At the same time, I wouldn’t be too disappointed if Beyoncé won for many of these (as she’s nominated for Record, Song, and Album, as well), but I greatly preferred “If I Were a Boy” to “Halo” (especially when performed live).
I really want Kelly Clarkson to win Best Pop Vocal Album for All I Ever Wanted because, well, I just love Kelly Clarkson. There – I said it, and I’m standing by it. I like that she’s become a bit more zaftig, and that she writes her own music, and that while she personifies what “pop music” is all about, she’s got chutzpah. To paraphrase the words of her latest hit: our lives (our lives!) would suck (would suck!) withooooout her!
Liza Minelli
I’d love to see Liza Minnelliwin Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for Liza’s at the Palace because she’s Liza with a freakin’ Z! “Maybe This Time” even received the Glee-treatment (and brought-in Kristin Chenowith for it). So, I’m hoping that “…it’s gonna happen, happen sometime – maybe this time (maybe this time)” she’ll win (again).
Beyoncé’s got my nod for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Single for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” as well as Best Contemporary R&B Albumfor I Am… Sasha Fierce.
Keri Hilson
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix is my choice for Best Alternative Music Album, and I think Keri Hilson is fabulous, and would love for her to win Best New Artist.
But really, I’m just curious to see what bizarre musical pairings occur onstage and whether they work or are train-wrecks.
