“A party-giver par excellence, who favored “large-man caftans” during the 1970s, Mr. Carr once feted Truman Capote in an abandoned Los Angeles jail.”
“Allan Carr, 62, the Producer of ‘Grease’ and ‘La Cage’” – The New York Times – July 1, 1999
Allan Carr’s story is one of epic highs and tragic lows. A shining example of Disco-era excess, Hollywood’s answer to PT Barnum; and unapologetically gay, at a time when that wasn’t particularly par for the course. His was the mind of a marketing savant; paired with an uncanny ability for talent – whether discovering it (think: Michelle Pfeiffer, Mark Hamill, Steve Guttenberg), or managing it (think: Tony Curtis, Joan Rivers, Miss Ann-Margret, Marvin Hamlisch, Peter Sellers). He also was known for his historic Hilhaven Lodge estate (complete with in-house discotheque), his legendary Rolodex, and his flair for entertaining. That I’m a longtime fan, should come as no surprise… Carr’s nickname was “Caftans Courageous,” for Pete’s sake!
Now, Emmy-winning documentarian, Jeffrey Schwarz (I Am Divine, Tab Hunter Confidential, Vito) has given us The Fabulous Allan Carr - the definitive look inside the life of a man who earned fame (Grease, Grease 2), shame (Can't Stop the Music, The 61st Academy Awards), and a Tony (La Cage aux Folles); and it will be screening, on Wednesday, November 1st, at Brenden Theatres at Palms Casino Resort.
Presented by the Las Vegas Film Festival, the screening is a benefit for The Center, and the wonderful programming and outreach they provide to the Las Vegas community. Tickets are $25 each, and for $100 you can attend the VIP reception, hosted by yours truly! There, in Brenden’s posh Celebrity Suite, (decked-out in a caftan, as if you had any doubt) I will be welcoming director Schwarz, producer John Boccardo, and co-producer Larry Spitler – the three of whom will be conducting an insightful Q&A, après - as well as the muckety-mucks from the LVFF and The Center.
See y’all, there; and remember what Allan said... "These are the good old days." (Though, considering the era, he might've just been listening to some Carly Simon records...)
