I love to shop. It doesn’t matter what for – baby clothes, Lucite chargers, art, cameras, jewelry, pretty much anything… Anything, that is, except for mattresses. Jeez, Louise!

So, there I was, last year in late winter and early spring. Jacob and I had gotten pretty serious, and while my Queen-sized bed was quite lovely for me and Sammy (who pretty much acts as though it’s his house, and I’m just lucky to be there), when I threw Jake’s six-and-a-half feet into the mix, the Queen was clearly not gonna cut it, anymore. (Ironic, isn’t it?) The time had come to upgrade to a King-sized mattress, but as I was soon to find out, this was easier said than done. It seems that on every block in Las Vegas there is a strip mall, and in every strip mall there is some sort of mattress distributor, mattress warehouse, mattress outlet, mattress liquidator, or some such thing. You know what? They all sell virtually the exact same thing – but with different names! Finally, when I was at the end of my rope (or, in this case, my ticking had frayed), Jacob was there with a simple pearl of wisdom: “I’ve never had a better night’s sleep in that Tower Apartment at Encore. Don’t they sell their mattress-sets at their home-store?” Well, I certainly couldn’t argue with his logic. And so, after calling Wynn LVNV on the Esplanade at Wynn Las Vegas, it came to pass that for my 36th birthday I received the Wynn Dream Bed with all the fixings. (Thanks Dad!)

To give you an idea of just how much I enjoy my Wynn Dream Bed: Sammy and I spent virtually all of my 37th birthday on that bed (with the exception of 10 minutes, during which we were kicked-out of the bedroom so the bed could be made), watching TiVo. Good times!
"Michael and Sammy" by Lorraine Goddard |
Furthermore, my fabulous friend Lorraine Goddard, was in Las Vegas, recently, from London. Lorraine, a crusader to raise awareness of mental health issues and reduce the stigma of depression, has spent the past few years photographing people in the public eye, for an exhibition entitled Out of Context. Dozens of A-list subjects, including Zac Posen, Vivienne Westwood, Mick Jones, Adam Ant, Amy Sacco, Naomi Watts, and me (who knew?) were photographed in black-and-white, by Lorraine, doing what makes them happy. Out of Context, hosted by Getty Images Gallery, is touring the UK before heading on to New York and LA, after which it will travel to Sydney, Dubai and Tokyo. After the exhibition is done touring, the images will be put-together for a coffee-table book, the proceeds of which will go to support charities reducing the stigma of mental health issues. So, what does this have to do with the price of tea in China? My “happy-place” is on my Wynn Dream Bed with Sammy. (Jacob wasn’t in town…) |
